I am now in my third year of uni and for the last year I have commuted each day… 3 hours there, 3 hours back. You maths genius’ would’ve worked out that I travel 6 hours a day when I’m scheduled to go into uni. That’s around 3 times a week. So I guess I would consider myself a bit of a pro when it comes to travelling – my journey includes a car journey to the station, a train, a tube and another train to the campus – and during this time, especially now that I’m reaching the most crucial part of my course, I have found a few ways of staying productive on the commute.
If you travel 6 hours a day like me or just 15 minutes, let that time be productive!
- Read a book
This one is something that I’ve always done without even thinking about it, I read for fun – I always have a book to read, I have to finish any book that I start, even if I’m hating it. Weird OCD habit. The train is a great place to read because you can really zone out from all the chaos of rush hour and escape into your own little world.
Staying on the theme of escaping into your “own little world”, I have mastered the art of meditation on public transport. No weird “ohm-ness” going on with my legs crossed or anything like that, but for the past few months I’ve really become a fan of the Calm app. It’s a guided meditation app that’s really easy to follow and just allows your mind to switch off from everything around you. Earphones in, world out.
- Brain training
Something which might not seem entirely productive is brain training. There have been times when I’ve been so tired on my commute that I’ve become a victim of the fall-asleep-head-roll-mouth-open gaze that seems to affect the best of us (only the very best, apparently) and so I’ve found that doing a sudoku or crossword puzzle helps to keep my brain alive and awake, as well as keeping my eyes open. And besides, something that is training your brain and making you think hard that early in the morning can only ever be a good thing, right?
- GET WORK DONE!
I’m not one to sit on the train on my laptop, mainly because I can’t be bothered to lug around my MacBook with me all day, but I do find that if I’ve made notes on something I aim to do when I get home, or if I’ve read a few chapters of a book I’m studying for my dissertation, then I always feel much better and productive once I’m off the train. It’s amazing how much you can get done when you’re on a train with no distractions. Of course, if you really want to work on your laptop on the train then that’s great and totally admirable, I only wish my laptop wasn’t so heavy so I could do the same!
- Make a to-do list
My last point is probably my favourite and most-used. Making a to-do list is so productive for me because it allows me to really plan my time well. Travelling to and from uni every day can take it’s toll on my productivity levels because travelling is so tiring. When I get home I tend to just want to sit around and catch up on Mad Men, but having a list of things that I need to get done helps me to focus. Ticking things off the list is so satisfying that I find that this alone is enough to make me want to
reluctantly click away from Netflix and do some work!
Of course there are days when all I want to do on my commute is listen to music, zone out and pretend I’m in a totes-emosh music video whilst gazing out of the window (probably listening to Adele, just to be a total cliché), but I’m trying my best to keep those days to a minimum and try something productive instead.
What do you do on a long commute, I’d love to try some of your ideas – I have another 6 months of commuting ahead of me!
Fierce sex appeal was basically the running theme of the Herve Leger by Max Azria show this week. Slicked back ponytails, geometric panels and thigh-high peep toe boots were all that mattered on a chilly Saturday in New York. Bandage-designed corsetry, asymmetric shapes with fringing and pleats to boot were all key aspects to the mood unto which creative director Lubov Azria sees the upcoming Winter period. Intricate beading and feather trims accessorised with bare legs provided the ever-present glitz and glam.

Zaraaaaaa. Zara Zara Zara. Zara is…. Well. Put it this way, I went in there today with the intention of spending £0, I really did. But of course I upped my budget once I saw these. But you see it would have been an absolute crime for me not to get them; the price tag said £29.99 which I thought was a steal. I tried them on and they were the comfiest boots ever in the whole world (no really, they are) and as I wandered around the shop, mentally spending three-figures over my intended budget, I went to the till where the nice Spanish man with slicked hair said, “That’s £12.99 please”. £12.99. TWELVE NINETY NINE?
So you see, it would have been just illegal for me not to, right?

After a long bout of HUGE adoration across the pond, Mabelline’s Baby Lips range has finally made it’s way to the UK! Introducing six shades onto our market, Baby Lips offer “intense care and 8 hour hydration, and is nourishing for baby soft lips”. With an SPF of 20 and costing only £2.99 you can’t really go wrong with these. I’ve heard great things about them and plan on buying the shades “Pink Punch” and “Cherry Me” at the weekend! H&M have collaborated with many amazing figures in the fashion world over the past 8 or so years and their latest project is in conjunction with the style maven that is Isabel Marant. Everybody’s go-to girl for practical, stylish, Parisian-chic clothing has collaborated with H&M for a new collection due out in November and earlier this week H&M teased us all with a preview of the upcoming collection.
What we will get from this collection is anyone’s guess but be sure that it’ll greatly reflect Marant’s style ethos from her runway collections. Wedged trainers? Tassle boots? Cropped moto leather trousers? Stylish knits? Who knows, but as H&M’s most anticipated collaboration yet, I certainly can’t wait to see what Ms Marant brings to the table with H&M! November 14th brings us the official launch of the line, with both womenswear AND menswear, along with shoes and accessories.
I actually wrote a blog post about these AllSaints beauties a while ago saying how much I wanted them and how I was probably going to buy them…. And I did. A girl true to my word, me. The only difference is that they made it to the amazing AllSaints sale!! They were £99 reduced from £165 and considering I was going to spend the full £165 I raced upstairs as fast as my short legs would take me (I’m 5’1 so let’s not make jokes), and punched in my card details so fast that if my laptop was a person, which it’s not so that’s a silly idea, but if it was it would’ve been wailing under the tremendous speed at which my fingertips were banging on the keys.
What was almost as impressive as the boots themselves was the shipping from the AllSaints website. The shipping was free which it always is for standard delivery orders, but it arrived less and 48 hours after I ordered! I ordered them on Sunday evening and they arrived Tuesday morning which is fab in my book!
Now the boots themselves are beautiful as you can see from my state of the art iPhone photography, stylistically devised in my back garden. Like a pro. The leather is as soft as butter and they’re just so comfy! The heel height is perfect to wear all day and they’ll go with anything! I will literally wear them with e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.
Check out the A M A Z I N G AllSaints sale right now, right this second!!! There’s only a few days left and the prices are really coming down! Check it out, here!
I’ve used nail polishes by Essie for a while now and I’m in love with them! They last for ages, almost a whole week; the colours always seem to be true (they always come out on the nail exactly as they look in the bottle); they dry pretty quickly and they’re very easy to apply, not too thin or goopy. Not to mention their array of colours is faaaaaabulous! Last week I bought two new nail polishes from Essie, Aruba Blue and Fiji. I’ve been looking for a cobalt/electric blue hue for a while, similar to the Nails inc. Baker Street one that Beyonce has sported recently, mostly likely in honour of her daughter Blue Ivy..
I wanted a blue similar to this and found Aruba Blue at Essie, which is a cobalt blue with pearly undertones in it, I think it’s flattering on my skin tone. I took a photo here of it on my nails so I can give a fair account of how it looked on my skin.
I really love this colour! I think it will look great in both summer and winter and looks great on toes too.
The other nail polish I bought from Essie was Fiji. I’ve heard lots of people praising this one up on YouTube so I thought I’d buy it and see what I thought. It is a very light pinky/milky colour that is both modern and super easy to wear, goes with everything and I know this may sound strange to some of you (others that are into nail polishes will know what I’m talking about) but I feel this polish makes my hands look cleaner… Haha okay that does sound crazy written down and I promise that my hands are always clean anyway but some polishes can make your hands look kind of murky or… dead. And this one just brightens up my hands.. Kind of like a highlight for your hands or something.
I can’t wait to wear this colour on holiday, I think it’ll look amazing with a tan!
