VOGUE SCRAPBOOK

Uni has been absolutely mind-bogglingly crazy these past few weeks and the next few weeks look just as insane. One of my assignments was to create a shopping page in the style of Vogue Scrapbook. I decided to go for the theme of a “dark fairytale” as seen on the catwalks of Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana for Autumn/Winter 2014.

We were then assigned to produce an accompanying photoshoot with the shopping piece and the result is below… I will do another blog post with the full range of photos included, but for now it’s just the one I submitted with my work.

Text:
DARK enchantment
Ethereal illusions captivate the heart, mind and soul of those willing to be cast under its spell…

Once upon a time in a far away land where denim is all but forbidden, exists a wonderland of all charming dimensions where child’s play is not limited to those in infancy. Dolce and Gabbana led this season’s enchanted offering with Little Red Riding Hood capes all the better to be seen in, along with splendidly embellished creations evoking only the most magical notions. Forest greens, deep-hued ruby reds, blood-curdling blacks and a trickle of gold were all seen on the autumn/winter 14 catwalks by way of Valentino, Erdem and Alice & Olivia who all captivated the enigmatic motif of the classic dark fairytale.

Nature-themed garments decorated with appliquéd butterflies, birds and roses at Valentino nod to Cinderella getting ready for her grand ball, whilst over at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton provides the darker edge to the fairytale matter with lurid evocations of past lands of make-believe. Fierce feathers provide the evasive charm to an otherworldly selection of garments of a luxurious couture-like quality. Gold accents are presented in all manner of accessories from filigree clutch bags adorned with jewels and chains; to gem-encrusted twinkly shoes by Dsquared² that will no doubt get Prince Charming’s heart racing as you skip off into the sunset. Pair your twinkly toes with equally twinkly fingernails with this season’s offering of ravishing nail lacquers from Dior.

The look comes into its own this winter with the release of Disney’s latest blockbuster Into the Woods starring the glorious Meryl Streep. Seemingly innocent, stemming from a Disney film, the undercurrents of style are of a feral innocence; this look is not for the faint-hearted. Snow White need not apply.

Follow the heart of your inner dark princess this winter party season and you’ll be in for a treat. From head-to-toe ethereal empress, to sparkly eyelids and a smattering of jewels with your LBD, however you don it you will no doubt be alluring; And with a tap of a wand you shall go to the ball, for you are the fairest of them all.

P.S. This was my first time using photoshop so please don’t judge me too harshly. I do enough of that to myself!

MY SPRING/SUMMER WISHLIST

Summer is here (although the grey clouds and low temperatures here in England suggest otherwise) which means it’s time to revamp our Winter wardrobes – If you live in most other countries you would’ve done this months ago, but this is the land where Spring and Autumn do not exist; the months simply seem to have no definition. Below are my top picks for Spring and Summer – I am absolutely loving the new collection from & Other Stories, I want every single piece!

SPRING SUMMER WISHLIST

CINCO DE MAYO & MY DRESSING TABLE

Can you believe it’s already 5 days into May? I was just getting used to the idea of April and then May came along and punched me in the face. Almost half way through the year and I feel older by the second. I moved home from uni this week and after much (and I really mean much) effort in packing two cars full of my belongings, I came back home where I realised nothing had a place in my room anymore. My clothes had nowhere to go, my shoes were lined up around the edge of the room and the makeup…. Ah the makeup. Makeup is my weakness, my guilty pleasure. No matter how many times my mum will try to convince me otherwise, there is always a need for nine shades of red lipstick right? Right?!

Having grossly misjudged my hoarding capabilities, I finally decided to sort out my (life) makeup once and for all, the results of which are shown below. All I can say is, all hail Muji and Home Sense.

Image

Makeup brush holder is actually a small plant pot from IKEA, brushes are mostly Real Techniques (all are dirty, been putting it off), acrylic drawer set from Muji, glass jar filled with cotton pads from IKEA and metal and glass container for single eyeshadows from Home Sense.

Mirror from IKEA, glass container for lip liners and lip glosses from Home Sense.

Muji acrylic drawer set, perfect for storing all of my MAC lipsticks.

The bottom drawer of the set has a jewellery divider. I swear Muji is the best thing to happen to makeup/jewellery hoarders like myself.

Image

The glass container that I keep some of my cream and single eyeshadows in, it was something crazy like £5.99 in Home Sense.

Rather a lot of makeup. I have another set of drawers underneath this unit that hold all my eyeshadow palettes, perfumes, skincare and haircare.

WEDNESDAY WISHLIST.

So with no earphones or book to entertain me on my train ride back to uni, I had to succumb (quite willingly) to the internet. Mainly the “shopping” corner of the internet. You know, that place that somehow lures you in every time you log on and whoops! suddenly you have another pair of jeans that you don’t need, three more lipsticks and a whole chunk missing from your bank account. Guilty as charged.

Whilst I did go on a spree somewhere between Stevenage and King’s Cross, I also held back and didn’t buy EVERYTHING I wanted. Here is a few things I could’ve bought to depress my bank account further.

PRINTED JEANS MANIA!

Printed jeans have become such a huge deal over the past few seasons and right now the trend is at it’s peak. The thing about jeans in general is that they are such a staple in (almost) anyone’s wardrobe (Daphne Guinness aside) and oh-so easily accessible. As for printed jeans, both the high street and high end market have some amazing versions, most of which will suit anyone with an ounce of flair. My own collection of printed jeans is in itself, extensive, and they’re always great conversation starters from people who love them, people who hate them and people who “don’t get” them. I for one love them, and for what my opinion is worth, feel that printed jeans will always be fab. Rest assured, I’ll be rocking printed skinnies when I’m in my 60s.

I tried to find my favourite 10 pairs of printed jeans on the internet and finally found them, after much umming and erring over deciding which ones to include (as there are easily about 76 pairs I could’ve chosen). I’ll put links in the captions so you can go ahead and purchase them too!

So there is my top 10 favourite printed jeans! I apologize that they’re all in a big looooooooong column, WordPress was playing silly beggars with me. The thrill about printed jeans is that they can be dressed up with heels and a blazer and tons of jewelery, dressed down in the winter with biker boots, thick socks and a scarf or thrown on in the summer with the cuffs rolled up and a pair of Havaianas.

Let me know where you stand on printed jeans! Which ones are your favourites?

MY NEW GLASSES!

I’m a huge fan of glasses, much to some people’s disbelief. I get people asking me all the time “Why do you not wear contacts?” and the simple answer is that I actually like wearing glasses. I find contact lenses to be a pain, I find them to be uncomfortable and “unnatural” to the eye. For me, my glasses are an important aspect of my everyday look and I try to choose glasses that reflect my style and personality. I don’t choose glasses to be discreet and blend into my face, I like to make a statement. For the past year I’ve been wearing my gorgeous Versace glasses, which I do still love, but I had my eyes tested last week at Vision Express and my eyes have both become worse by two “stages” (I don’t know what the official term is for going up stages in optometry, sorry!) and I was finding it increasingly difficult to see through them.

These are my "old" Versace glasses. I really love them still, I feel like they really suit me and I've had replacement lenses put in them. They're by Versace and I believe they come in four colours.

Now, I do love those glasses and wanted to find out how much it would cost through independent opticians to put new lenses in them to still be able to wear them. Turns out, it’s quite expensive to go to an independent opticians to do it so I enquired about it when I went for my eye test. Whilst I was there, I naturally strolled over to the vast selection they had on display and immediately began trying on as many pairs as I could and of course I decided that I wanted a new pair.

I found these glasses by Polo Ralph Lauren in the men’s section and FELL IN LOVE. I love the electric blue colour because although it’s a bright, statement making colour, it’s still quite neutral and goes with almost everything clothes-wise and makeup-wise.

photo-54

I really like big framed glasses rather than the slimmer rectangular styles and the men’s section is perfect for finding the bigger frames! I also like the contrast of the white arms on these. I was toying with this pair and a pair of Prada glasses that I absolutely LOVED as well, I originally wanted a tortoiseshell pair and they were the perfect shade, but in the end I went for these; I might ask for the Prada pair for Christmas this year (fingers crossed!).

I always find my experience as a customer in Vision Express pleasing, the staff are always very helpful, sometimes perhaps a little too helpful, but I don’t mind that really. The actual opticians are always very relaxed and make you feel at ease which is always a bonus! The shop assistants, whenever I go in there, are always on hand for assistance and leave you alone when you don’t want to be hassled when trying on glasses for yourself.

I was made aware of an offer that if you spend over £149 (I think, don’t quote me on that) that you’ll get another pair of £99 glasses for free, which I think is a fab deal! However, I couldn’t actually find any glasses in the store that suited me well enough for me to choose them; because even though they were free it would be a waste for me to have them and never wear them if I wasn’t totally comfortable with the way they looked on me. This is where I asked about the price for lenses to be put into my Versace pair.

The sales assistant left the desk to ask someone about the price and came back and told me that they could treat my pair of lenses in my Versace glasses as my free second pair of glasses so I got those for free too!

I’ve also seen some amazing sunglasses in there which I might invest in at a later date. I have a pair of prescription sunglasses already under my previous prescription from last year and as it’s getting towards the end of the Summer and I’ve already been on holiday, I think it wouldn’t be wise of me to be buying into expensive pairs of prescription sunglasses at this time.

I really recommend Vision Express, (rather than Specsavers because I’ve used them too), as an opticians for the deals they have, the vast expanse of choice in terms of frames and the staff are brilliant too.

Let me know what you think of my new glasses, do you like them or are they too much?
