Uni has been absolutely mind-bogglingly crazy these past few weeks and the next few weeks look just as insane. One of my assignments was to create a shopping page in the style of Vogue Scrapbook. I decided to go for the theme of a “dark fairytale” as seen on the catwalks of Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana for Autumn/Winter 2014.
We were then assigned to produce an accompanying photoshoot with the shopping piece and the result is below… I will do another blog post with the full range of photos included, but for now it’s just the one I submitted with my work.
Ethereal illusions captivate the heart, mind and soul of those willing to be cast under its spell…
Once upon a time in a far away land where denim is all but forbidden, exists a wonderland of all charming dimensions where child’s play is not limited to those in infancy. Dolce and Gabbana led this season’s enchanted offering with Little Red Riding Hood capes all the better to be seen in, along with splendidly embellished creations evoking only the most magical notions. Forest greens, deep-hued ruby reds, blood-curdling blacks and a trickle of gold were all seen on the autumn/winter 14 catwalks by way of Valentino, Erdem and Alice & Olivia who all captivated the enigmatic motif of the classic dark fairytale.
Nature-themed garments decorated with appliquéd butterflies, birds and roses at Valentino nod to Cinderella getting ready for her grand ball, whilst over at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton provides the darker edge to the fairytale matter with lurid evocations of past lands of make-believe. Fierce feathers provide the evasive charm to an otherworldly selection of garments of a luxurious couture-like quality. Gold accents are presented in all manner of accessories from filigree clutch bags adorned with jewels and chains; to gem-encrusted twinkly shoes by Dsquared² that will no doubt get Prince Charming’s heart racing as you skip off into the sunset. Pair your twinkly toes with equally twinkly fingernails with this season’s offering of ravishing nail lacquers from Dior.
The look comes into its own this winter with the release of Disney’s latest blockbuster Into the Woods starring the glorious Meryl Streep. Seemingly innocent, stemming from a Disney film, the undercurrents of style are of a feral innocence; this look is not for the faint-hearted. Snow White need not apply.
Follow the heart of your inner dark princess this winter party season and you’ll be in for a treat. From head-to-toe ethereal empress, to sparkly eyelids and a smattering of jewels with your LBD, however you don it you will no doubt be alluring; And with a tap of a wand you shall go to the ball, for you are the fairest of them all.
P.S. This was my first time using photoshop so please don’t judge me too harshly. I do enough of that to myself!
One of my personal favourite designers, Tex Saverio from Indonesia, is gearing up to showcase his latest collection for Autumn/Winter 2014. This marks his second season showing Ready-To-Wear on the Paris Fashion Week off-schedule. A year ago, Saverio’s eponymous label was made a part of a joint program between London College of Fashion and Indonesia Fashion Forward. The result of which was the creation of Saverio’s first official ready-to-wear collection, only nine months later, launching last October for Spring/Summer 2014.
Known mainly for his outlandish and beautifully avant-garde creations, this collaboration shows Saverio’s capability to translate his innovative designs into ready-to-wear products, fit for western consumers.
You may not have specifically heard the name “Tex Saverio” but I’m sure that a lot of you will have seen his work. That exquisite wedding gown worn by Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games? That’s Saverio’s. Having been a fan of his for almost three years now, I can’t wait to see what Autumn/Winter 2014 brings. Listen out for Tex Saverio, you’ll be hearing his name more and more, I’m sure of it. Stay tuned on the blog for updates on the Tex Saverio A/W 2014 collection!

So yesterday, whilst I was being all cultured and intellectual, I was reading The Times and I came across an article on Funkybod; shape-wear for men. When I first saw it I sniggered thinking “that is the most vain and ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen”; but then I looked down at my own padded bra and across the room to my optical illusion dress and my mind wondered to the millions of pairs of Spanx that are bought by women all over the world every year. Oh. I carried on reading with intrigue and realised that whilst the common notion from women is that the media over-sexualises us, we are our own worst enemies. We create the hype ourselves.
The craze for men wearing makeup, straightening their hair, using self tan and getting botox leaves most women (and other men) with the impression that such an individual “must be gay” or that he’s as vain as Kelly Brook’s Instagram page. But aren’t all these things women use on a regular basis? Some of which, women see as a necessity; an integral part of their daily life.
So why is it so different for men? We’re all programmed to believe that women are supposed to stay ageless, a size 8 and always effortless while men can pretty much do what they want (without becoming slobbish). Funkybod produces tops for men that are “designed to give the appearance and feel of muscle size and definition.” Now when I first saw the photo of the poor volunteer I definitely though that surely that’s just a serious case of false representation? And then I googled Spanx…
… And padded bras…
… And optical illusion dresses…
Okay, who did I think I was? Besides the Spanx, I own every piece of body-sculpting, bust-boosting, leg-lengthening product available on the market. Why shouldn’t men be able to do the same?
The idea seems ridiculous, but why should women be able to deceive men of their looks and it not be allowed to be reciprocated? Having said all this, I’m not quite sure how I would feel if my (imaginary) boyfriend went around with foam-induced pecs and biceps. But each to his/her own.
There’s only a short amount of time left before the AllSaints sale ends and everything has gone down in price again! It’s so tempting!!! I’ve just bought two more things from the website which I will blog about when they arrive! I bought these boots from there last week and it’s really naughty of me to be buying more, but as it’s AllSaints I really can’t resist! Check out the sale HERE!!! It’s ends really soon so get in there quick!!
H&M have collaborated with many amazing figures in the fashion world over the past 8 or so years and their latest project is in conjunction with the style maven that is Isabel Marant. Everybody’s go-to girl for practical, stylish, Parisian-chic clothing has collaborated with H&M for a new collection due out in November and earlier this week H&M teased us all with a preview of the upcoming collection.
What we will get from this collection is anyone’s guess but be sure that it’ll greatly reflect Marant’s style ethos from her runway collections. Wedged trainers? Tassle boots? Cropped moto leather trousers? Stylish knits? Who knows, but as H&M’s most anticipated collaboration yet, I certainly can’t wait to see what Ms Marant brings to the table with H&M! November 14th brings us the official launch of the line, with both womenswear AND menswear, along with shoes and accessories.
